Vacation Camp

Every year during the vacation period, Shaishav holds vacation camps for children. These daily camps take place every morning for four hours during the month of May. The camps help to keep children’s interest in education and stop them from getting into work during the vacation. At all these places- the CECs and municipal schools in slum areas- we divide the children into subgroups according to their level and age. Educational and developmental activities like creative activities, life skills, and value education is done with the children according to their level. There is a lot of emphasis on community work in this programme. Fieldwork is done daily to follow up on children’s attendance and update parents.

The camps are held in areas where children are least likely to enroll in school, in order to prepare them for the coming academic year. Thus vacation camps are a regular short-term event but very effective program for enrolment, and retention. It is done in the community itself so it is cost effective as well. At the end of the month-long camp, the children put on a cultural program and eminent guests are invited to send a positive message to the students.

The vacation camp was organized in 9 areas and 6 municipal schools and 1,233 children participated.

Following the vacation camps, an enrollment drive was held in conjunction with the Education Department. The Mobile Van went around to different areas and got children and parents prepared for the coming school year by registering them in nearby schools.
